More O/S Sill

Looking down the sill. I have cut away big flat sections of membrane and outer sill.

I prefer to use a spot weld drill to remove the spot welds.  I first start it off with an 8mm HSS drill for about 20 seconds then finish it with the spot weld drill for about 10 seconds.  Finally use a cold chisel to separate the metal panels.

Most of the tools I use

Behind dogleg:  This was hard. The membrane, inner sill and outer sill were welded along their top edge and tucked behind the inner side panel. This was hard.  Used chisel and air powered hack saw to separate them Had to bend up the inner panel to get access.  Looks messy but it'll be OK when flattened and welded.

Had to drill out all of these spot welds on front kick panel. Spot welds behind the A post had to be drilled out from inside the car.

O/S Sill replacement - Cutting Out

A voyage of discovery to see what needs to be replaced.  The outer sill and membrane definitely need to be done but the castle rail and inner sill seem to be good.

Cut out dogleg leaving a good 1" in place to remove later

a  few spot welds drilled out

used cutting disk on angle grinder to cut out some big sections

mind the gap.....

Back from the shot blasting by Pearce Brothers of Measham.  Prior to painting with zinc based UPOL Weld-thru primer to stop the rust breaking out.

N/S sill looking not too good, but floor and castle rail in good shape.....

...and at the n/s dogleg....

....pretty good apart from sills....

....o/s sill at the front = "toast"....

....and just as bad at the o/s rear dogleg.  New sills required both sides.

By 10th December 2014 the car was looking like this.

Taken to be steam cleaned before going on to be shot blast later that day (thanks Steve!):

The steam cleaner did a great job but could not remove the caked on gloop on the underside.  Not sure if it was underseal or caked on oil/grease:

Some pictures during 2014 when in the process of removing all components for a "nut + bolt" rebuild.  Engine and gearbox about to come out:

I started dismantling the B in the Christmas break of 2013.

It is a 1974 MGB Roadster. Chrome Bumper manufactured in August 1974 during the last few days of chrome bumper cars.

Here are some before pictures:
